Chapter 4: The Corruption's First Victim

~1.6k words · 2026-06-22

The corrupted beast's roar shook the swamp as Lin's fist connected with its twisted hide. Shadows wrapped around his arm like armor, amplifying the impact. The creature stumbled sideways, black ichor spraying from the wound.

*"Don't let it recover!"* The shadow panther's voice cut through the chaos.

Lin didn't need the warning. He was already moving, his body responding to instincts that weren't entirely human. The lightning hawk's speed made him a blur, and he reappeared above the beast, both hands crackling with electricity.

He drove them down like hammers.

The corrupted beast's back exploded in a shower of black flesh. It howled, thrashing wildly, its tail whipping toward Lin's head. He twisted midair, the wind-snake's flexibility allowing him to contort in ways no normal human could. The tail grazed his cheek, drawing blood.

But he was already inside its guard.

*[Shadow Strike]*

The panther's technique manifested through him—his hand became a blade of pure darkness, plunging into the beast's chest. The creature froze. Its red eyes flickered once, twice, then went dark.

Lin yanked his hand back as the corpse collapsed, the ground shaking from the impact.

Silence fell over the swamp. The disciples stared at him, their mouths hanging open. One of them—a girl with dirt-streaked cheeks and a broken sword—took a hesitant step forward.

"You... you killed a corrupted Ironhide Bull like it was nothing," she whispered. "That's a Rank 5 beast. Even our sect leader would struggle alone."

Lin looked at his hands. The shadows were receding, the lightning fading, the serpentine gleam leaving his eyes. He felt the strain now—a dull ache spreading through his meridians. Three beasts at once. The power was incredible, but the cost was real.

"Your sect leader isn't me," he said, surprised by how steady his voice sounded.

The girl's eyes widened. Then she laughed, a sound caught between relief and hysteria. "Right. Right, of course not." She sheathed her broken weapon and bowed. "I'm Zhao Mei, outer disciple of the Azure Dragon Sect. We owe you our lives."

"The corruption," Lin said, ignoring the formalities. "How long has it been spreading?"

Zhao Mei's face darkened. "Months. It started in the eastern reaches, near the Abandoned Wastes. At first, we thought it was just a few wild beasts turning aggressive. But now..." She gestured at the corpse. "This is the third corrupted beast we've encountered today. They're getting stronger. More organized."

*"She speaks truth,"* the shadow panther said, appearing beside Lin. Its yellow eyes were fixed on the corpse. *"I felt it in the swamp. Something is herding these creatures. Pushing them toward the valley's center."*

"Herding?" Lin frowned. "For what purpose?"

Before the panther could answer, a new sound cut through the night—a deep, resonant hum that seemed to come from everywhere at once. The ground trembled. The surviving disciples grabbed their weapons, eyes wild.

"What is that?" Zhao Mei breathed.

Lin's beasts reacted before he did. The lightning hawk screeched, diving from the sky to land on his shoulder, feathers bristling with electricity. The wind-snake uncoiled, hissing at the darkness. The shadow panther growled, a sound that vibrated through Lin's bones.

*"Something old,"* the panther whispered. *"Something that should not be awake."*

The hum grew louder. And then Lin saw it—a pulse of dark light, erupting from somewhere deep in the swamp. It spread outward like a ripple, turning the mist black as it passed.

"Get down!" Lin grabbed Zhao Mei and threw them both behind a fallen tree.

The pulse washed over them. It felt like a thousand needles piercing his skin, like ice water in his veins. His beasts screamed in his mind, and he felt the shadow panther's consciousness flicker, almost breaking their bond.

Then it passed.

Lin gasped, scrambling to his knees. The disciples were alive, though pale and shaking. The corrupted beast's corpse was gone—dissolved into black sludge that steamed in the swamp water.

"What the hell was that?" Zhao Mei's voice cracked.

Lin didn't answer. He was staring at the direction the pulse had come from. His new senses, sharpened by the triple bond, picked up something terrible—a presence so vast it made his soul tremble.

*"The source,"* the shadow panther said, its voice barely a whisper. *"The corruption has a heart."*

"We need to leave," Lin said, forcing himself to stand. "Now."

But as he turned to lead the disciples away, the ground beneath them split open.

A chasm tore through the swamp, swallowing trees and earth in a cascade of black mud. Lin grabbed Zhao Mei and leaped, the lightning hawk's speed carrying them across the gap. The other disciples weren't so lucky—two of them fell screaming into the darkness below.

"NO!" Zhao Mei reached out, but Lin held her back.

"The chasm is spreading!" He dragged her backward as the crack continued to widen, following some unseen pattern. The shadow panther appeared beside them, its form flickering with distress.

*"It's not random,"* it said. *"The chasm is forming a circle. We're being enclosed."*

Lin's blood ran cold. He looked around, and the panther was right—the chasm was curving, creating a barrier of black nothingness that surrounded them on all sides. The only way out was forward, toward the source of the pulse.

"Whoever's doing this wants us to go deeper," Lin muttered. "They're herding us, just like the beasts."

Zhao Mei clutched her broken sword. "What do we do?"

Lin closed his eyes, reaching out to his three beasts. The wind-snake was afraid, the lightning hawk was angry, but the shadow panther—the panther was curious. It sensed something familiar in the corruption's heart. Something ancient.

*"The temple,"* the panther said. *"The place where I was sealed. There were markings there, warnings about the corruption's origin. I thought they were myths, but..."*

"But they weren't," Lin finished. He opened his eyes, and a decision crystallized in his chest. "We're going in."

"WHAT?" Zhao Mei grabbed his arm. "Lin Xiao, that thing just killed two of my sect brothers! Going toward it is suicide!"

"Staying here is suicide." Lin pointed at the chasm, which was slowly but steadily closing in. "In an hour, there won't be anywhere left to stand. Our only chance is to find the source and destroy it."

Zhao Mei stared at him like he was insane. Maybe he was. But as he met her gaze, she saw something that made her hesitate—not confidence, but certainty.

"You really believe you can do this," she whispered.

"I have to." Lin looked at his hands. Three beasts bonded. A power he still didn't fully understand. And a valley that was dying. "I'm not strong enough yet. But I will be."

The shadow panther laughed, a dark, approving sound. *"Bold words, little tamer. Let's see if you can back them up."*

Lin started walking toward the darkness. Behind him, Zhao Mei took a shaking breath, then followed. The lightning hawk took to the sky, scouting ahead. The wind-snake coiled around Lin's arm, ready. The shadow panther vanished into the mist.

They moved through the swamp for what felt like hours, though time lost meaning in the corrupted mist. The ground grew more twisted, the trees blackened and dead. They passed the corpses of beasts—some corrupted, some not—all of them drained of their cores.

*"Something is harvesting them,"* the panther observed. *"The corruption doesn't just kill. It consumes."*

Finally, they reached it.

The heart of the corruption was a tower of black crystal, jutting from the swamp like a broken fang. It pulsed with that same malevolent light, casting shadows that moved against the wind. Around its base, dozens of corrupted beasts stood guard—not mindless anymore, but waiting. Watching.

And standing at the tower's entrance was a figure.

Human. Or once human. Its body was a patchwork of corrupted flesh and black crystal, arms too long, fingers ending in claws. Its face was a mask of agony, eyes burning with the same red light as the beasts.

"I was wondering when someone would come," the figure said, its voice a chorus of whispers. "The beast resonance user. The one who bonds across barriers." It tilted its head, a crack forming in its crystalline cheek. "I've been waiting for you, Lin Xiao."

Lin's blood froze. "Who are you?"

The figure laughed, a sound like breaking bones. "I was a beast tamer, once. Before the corruption took me. Before I understood the truth." It spread its arms, and the corrupted beasts behind it roared in unison. "The beasts are not meant to serve us. We are meant to serve them. The strongest beast—the one that sleeps beneath this valley—has chosen me as its herald."

"Chosen you?" Lin's hands clenched. "You're a puppet."

"All beast tamers are puppets, boy. The only difference is knowing whose strings you dance on." The figure stepped forward, and the ground trembled. "But I offer you a choice. Join me. Let the ancient one consume your beasts, and you will gain power beyond your imagination. Or fight, and die like the others."

Lin looked at Zhao Mei. She was pale, terrified, but she met his eyes and nodded once.

He looked at his beasts. The wind-snake, small and broken, but fierce. The lightning hawk, proud and wild. The shadow panther, ancient and cunning.

*"We fight,"* the panther said.

*"We fight,"* the hawk agreed.

*"We fight,"* the snake hissed.

Lin smiled. He raised his hand, and his beasts' power flooded into him like a river of fire.

"I choose option three," he said. "I'm going to tear your heart out and use it to save this valley."

The figure's smile widened. "I was hoping you'd say that."

The corrupted beasts charged.

And Lin Xiao, the laughingstock of Thousand Beast Valley, stepped forward to meet them.
