Chapter 3: The Shadow Panther's Test

~1.8k words · 2026-06-22

The morning sun painted Thousand Beast Valley in hues of amber and gold, but Lin Xiao felt none of its warmth. Three days had passed since his breakthrough to the second level of the Beast Melding Realm, and his body still hummed with unfamiliar energy. The broken wind-snake coiled around his left arm, its scales cool against his skin, while the lightning hawk perched on his shoulder, preening feathers that crackled with residual sparks.

"You're pushing yourself too hard," a voice said from behind him.

Lin turned to find Elder Wu standing at the entrance of his crude hut, the old man's weathered face creased with concern. Despite his age, Elder Wu moved with the fluid grace of someone who had spent decades communing with beasts. His bonded companion, a massive earth bear, lumbered at his side, its fur caked with dried mud.

"I need to be ready," Lin replied, clenching his fist. "The sect trials are in two weeks."

"And you think rushing into the Shadowmire without proper preparation is wise?"

Lin's jaw tightened. The Shadowmire—a swamp in the eastern section of the valley where shadow-attuned beasts made their dens. It was the only place he could find a shadow panther, and his plan required one.

"I don't have time to waste."

Elder Wu sighed, shaking his head. "Your [Beast Resonance] is a rare gift, boy. But gifts don't make up for stupidity. What exactly are you planning?"

Lin hesitated, then extended his hand. The lightning hawk chirped, fluttering down to perch on his palm. With a thought, Lin activated his ability.

*[Beast Resonance: Active]*

The world shifted. Colors bled together, sounds became sharper, and he felt the hawk's instincts overlay his own. His vision sharpened, picking out the faint heat signatures of small creatures in the underbrush. The wind-snake's head lifted, its tongue flickering as it tasted the air through their shared senses.

Elder Wu's eyes widened. "You can maintain the link with two beasts simultaneously?"

"Three, if I push it," Lin said, releasing the resonance. The world snapped back to normal, leaving him slightly dizzy. "But it's not enough. When I fought those Sect disciples, I barely won. If they'd had their bonded beasts with them, I would have lost."

"So you want a shadow panther to add stealth and ambush capabilities to your arsenal."

"Exactly. With the hawk's ranged attacks, the snake's poison, and the panther's shadow-walking, I can cover every combat scenario."

Elder Wu was silent for a long moment. Then he reached into his robes and pulled out a jade talisman, tossing it to Lin. "Take this. It's a beast-repelling charm. Won't work on anything above the third rank, but it'll keep the lesser creatures off your back."

Lin caught the talisman, warmth spreading through his chest. "Why are you helping me?"

"Because I've seen what happens to talented boys who think they're invincible," Elder Wu said, his voice heavy. "They end up as fertilizer for the valley. Don't become another cautionary tale."

The old man turned and walked away, the earth bear following close behind. Lin watched him go, then looked down at the talisman in his hand. For the first time in days, he allowed himself a small smile.

---

The Shadowmire lived up to its name.

Dark, twisted trees rose from murky water, their roots creating treacherous walkways that shifted with every step. Mist hung thick in the air, muffling sounds and distorting distances. Lin moved carefully, the wind-snake wrapped around his neck like a living scarf, its tongue constantly tasting for threats.

The lightning hawk circled overhead, its cry echoing through the swamp. Through their link, Lin could feel its irritation—the mist interfered with its vision, making it difficult to spot prey from above.

*"Stay alert,"* he sent through the resonance. *"We're not alone."*

Something moved in the shadows to his left. Lin froze, his hand inching toward the dagger at his belt. The wind-snake's coils tightened, a warning.

A pair of golden eyes blinked into existence twenty feet away.

Then another pair. And another.

Lin counted six sets of eyes before he stopped. Shadow beasts. Not panthers, but lesser shadow-foxes. Pack hunters that used the mist to disorient their prey before striking.

*"Hawk, light them up."*

The lightning hawk shrieked, diving from the sky. Lightning erupted from its wings, illuminating the swamp in a strobe of white-blue light. The shadow-foxes hissed, their eyes adjusting painfully to the sudden brightness.

Lin moved.

He wasn't as fast as the beasts, but he didn't need to be. The wind-snake uncoiled, launching itself at the nearest fox. Its fangs sank into the creature's neck, venom flooding the wound. The fox yelped, stumbling back as its muscles seized.

Two more foxes circled, trying to flank him. Lin spun, his dagger flashing. The blade caught one across the snout, drawing blood. The other lunged, jaws aiming for his throat.

*[Beast Resonance: Merge]*

Time slowed.

Lin felt the wind-snake's instincts flood his mind—the way its body moved without bones, the way it sensed vibrations through the air. His spine seemed to liquefy as he twisted, flowing around the fox's attack like water around a stone. His hand shot out, fingers clenched into a spear, and drove into the beast's exposed ribs.

The fox yelped, scrambling back. But Lin didn't let up. He pressed forward, striking again and again, his movements becoming more serpentine with each blow. The wind-snake's essence sang through his veins, amplifying his speed and flexibility beyond human limits.

By the time the remaining foxes fled, Lin stood panting over three corpses. The resonance faded, leaving him feeling drained but exhilarated.

*"Good work,"* he sent to his beasts.

The lightning hawk landed on his shoulder, nuzzling his cheek. The wind-snake slithered back up his arm, its tongue flickering contentedly.

But there was no time to rest. The commotion would attract larger predators. Lin forced himself to move deeper into the swamp, his eyes scanning for any sign of shadow panther tracks.

---

He found them near a collapsed stone structure—what looked like the ruins of an ancient temple, half-submerged in the murky water. Pugmarks, easily twice the size of his hand, led into the darkness beneath the crumbling archway.

Lin's heart raced. This was it.

He approached cautiously, activating his [Beast Sight]—a basic ability that allowed beast tamers to sense the spiritual energy of nearby creatures. The temple pulsed with dark qi, thick and cloying. A shadow panther's den, no doubt.

*"Wait here,"* he told his beasts. *"If I don't come out in fifteen minutes, come find me."*

The lightning hawk chirped in protest, but Lin was already moving into the darkness.

The air grew cold as he descended into the temple's depths. Strange carvings lined the walls—depictions of ancient beast tamers communing with shadow spirits, their forms merging into twisted shapes that defied nature. Lin ignored them, his focus fixed on the path ahead.

The tunnel opened into a large chamber, and Lin stopped dead.

A shadow panther lay in the center of the room, its sleek black form curled around a pile of bones. But this wasn't an ordinary shadow panther. Its fur rippled with living darkness, and its eyes—when they opened—bore the unmistakable gleam of intelligence.

*"You reek of other beasts, little tamer,"* a voice echoed in his mind. Not words, but impressions. Feelings. The panther's spiritual pressure pressed down on him, making his knees tremble. *"Why have you come?"*

Lin swallowed. This beast was at least third rank—maybe higher. A single mistake and he'd be dead.

"I seek a bond," he said, keeping his voice steady. "I need your strength."

The panther rose, its movements fluid and predatory. It circled him, its tail swishing lazily. *"You barely control the beasts you have. Why would I submit to one so weak?"*

"Because I can offer you something no one else can."

The panther stopped, tilting its head. *"And what is that?"*

Lin extended his hand, activating [Beast Resonance]. The panther's eyes widened as it felt the strange energy wash over it—the promise of fusion, of becoming something greater than a single entity.

*"I can make you stronger,"* Lin said. *"Stronger than any beast in this valley. Together, we can reach heights no beast tamer has ever achieved."*

For a long moment, the panther was silent. Then, slowly, it stepped forward and pressed its forehead against Lin's palm.

The bond formed like fire in his chest.

*[Shadow Panther Bonded: Rank 3 - Shadowmire Stalker]*

Lin gasped as the panther's power flooded his meridians, pushing his cultivation toward the third level of the Beast Melding Realm. His vision doubled, then tripled, as he saw through the panther's eyes—darkness no longer an obstacle, but a cloak.

*"We have a deal, little tamer,"* the panther's voice echoed in his mind. *"But know this—I will test you. And if you prove unworthy, I will devour your soul."*

Lin smiled, despite the threat. "Fair enough."

---

He emerged from the temple an hour later, the shadow panther padding silently at his side. The lightning hawk shrieked in alarm at the new arrival, but settled when Lin sent calming thoughts through their bond.

*"Three beasts,"* Lin murmured, looking at his hands. The power thrumming through his veins was intoxicating. *"I actually have three beasts."*

But the celebration was short-lived.

A scream echoed through the swamp—high-pitched and terrified. Lin's head snapped up, his new senses extending outward. He felt them: a group of people, surrounded by something big. Something angry.

*"Come on,"* he said, breaking into a sprint. The shadow panther vanished into the darkness, its presence becoming a whisper in his mind. The lightning hawk took to the air, scouting ahead. The wind-snake coiled tighter, ready to strike.

He burst through a wall of mist and found chaos.

A hunting party—disciples from one of the major sects, judging by their robes—were pinned against a rock formation by a massive creature. A corrupted beast, its body a mess of twisted flesh and broken bone, stood twenty feet tall. Its eyes burned with malevolent red light, and black qi leaked from every wound on its body.

Corruption. The plague that had been spreading through Thousand Beast Valley for months.

"Help us!" one of the disciples cried, seeing Lin. "Please!"

Lin didn't hesitate. He raised his hand, and the shadow panther materialized behind the corrupted beast, claws extended. The lightning hawk dove, electricity arcing between its wings. The wind-snake hissed, venom dripping from its fangs.

*[Beast Resonance: Triple Merge]*

The world exploded into sensation.

Lin felt himself become something beyond human. The panther's stealth, the hawk's speed, the snake's flexibility—all of it flowed through him in a symphony of power. His body flickered with shadows, lightning sparked along his arms, and his eyes gleamed with serpentine cunning.

The corrupted beast roared, charging at him.

Lin smiled.

He moved like smoke, appearing behind the creature before it could react.
