Chapter 13: The Rootless Run

~2.0k words · 2026-09-08

Kai didn't think. He ran.

The mountain path blurred beneath his feet as he burst through the treeline, branches whipping at his face. Behind him, Wei's golden light exploded through the canopy, turning the forest into a patchwork of amber and shadow. A pillar of energy slammed into the earth where Kai had been standing a heartbeat before, sending chunks of soil and splintered roots spraying into the night.

*He's not holding back,* the Void Sovereign observed, his voice strained. *He means to kill you with everything he has left.*

*I noticed.*

Kai ducked as another lance of golden light screamed past his ear, close enough to singe his hair. The temperature around him spiked, the forest air turning thick and heavy. Each breath tasted like ash. His muscles screamed in protest, the stolen Solar Root Qi churning violently in his dantian like a caged beast trying to tear its way out.

*To the river,* the Void Sovereign commanded. *The water will disperse his light. It will give you cover.*

Kai changed direction without question, crashing through a curtain of hanging vines. His bare feet—still missing his boots from that first brutal encounter with Wei—found purchase on moss-covered stone, then slick mud. The roar of the mountain river grew louder, drowning out Wei's shouted curses.

He broke through the final wall of trees and nearly went sprawling off the embankment. The river was a churning beast, swollen with recent rains, white water crashing against black boulders. Moonlight fractured across the surface, making it impossible to see the bottom.

*Jump,* the Void Sovereign said.

*It's a thirty-foot drop onto rocks.*

*I said JUMP.*

Kai leapt. The cold hit him like a physical blow, knocking the air from his lungs. The current seized him, tumbling him end over end, grinding him against stones he couldn't see. He swallowed water, choked, fought his way toward the surface. Golden light pierced the water above him, turning the river into molten gold, and he dove deeper, letting the current drag him downstream.

His lungs burned. The stolen power in his dantian burned worse. It was trying to reverse its flow, trying to claw its way back out of him, back toward its original owner.

*A Solar Root is not like lesser roots,* the Void Sovereign said, his voice strained, as if he were physically wrestling with something inside Kai's body. *It is proud. It does not take well to being consumed by a lesser vessel. You must assert dominance over it, or it will assert dominance over you.*

*How?*

*Convince it that you are the stronger predator.*

Kai's vision darkened at the edges. The current slammed him against a submerged log, and his grip on consciousness wavered. Dimly, he was aware of the golden light fading above him, of Wei's silhouette on the bank growing smaller as the river carried Kai around a bend.

*Look at it,* the Void Sovereign said. *Truly look at it.*

Kai turned his awareness inward, a trick he'd learned in the months of grueling training at the bottom of the sealed well. His dantian was a swirling storm of chaos—fragments of Wei's golden light mixed with his own pale, almost transparent Qi. The Solar Root's power was spectacular, radiant, a miniature sun that had no business existing inside a body as weak as his own. It burned, and it hated him.

*Not all roots are the same,* the Void Sovereign continued. *Some are tools. Some are allies. And some... some are prey. The Solar Root has only ever known itself as the apex. It has never met something that could devour it. Show it what you are.*

Kai reached out with his own Qi—the thin, colorless strand that had been nothing but a burden his entire life. The Void Root's essence was not flashy. It didn't glow, it didn't burn. It simply *was*. And as he pressed it against the Solar Root's mass, something shifted.

The golden light recoiled.

It felt it. For the first time in its existence, the Solar Root felt what it was like to be prey. A predator's instinct, honed over millennia, told it that the pale nothing swimming beside it was the last thing it would ever see if it didn't submit. The gold flickered, dimmed, then folded inward, compressing into a tight, trembling sphere at the center of Kai's dantian.

The pain vanished.

Kai broke the surface of the river, gasping. The water was calmer here, the current gentler. He'd been carried far downstream, away from the cliff and the estate and his brother. The far bank was a gentle slope of grass and wildflowers, and he dragged himself onto it, collapsing face-first into the mud.

He lay there for a long moment, chest heaving, water streaming from his clothes. The golden sphere pulsed inside him—not painfully, but with a strange, almost submissive rhythm. It was still foreign, still uncomfortable, but it was no longer trying to destroy him.

*Well done,* the Void Sovereign said quietly. *I did not think you would master it so quickly.*

*Neither did I.* Kai pushed himself up onto his elbows, spitting mud from his mouth. His body ached everywhere. His cultivation base had been violently forced upward by the Solar Root's infusion, and he could feel the instability in it—like a tower built on sand. *What stage am I at now?*

*Peak of the third stage. Perhaps halfway to the fourth.* The Void Sovereign paused. *I must caution you. This growth is not natural. It was not earned. The Solar Root has given you power, but it has also made you fragile. If you do not consolidate your foundation, the next time you take a blow, it may be your cultivation that breaks, not your body.*

Kai climbed to his feet, swaying. The world tilted around him, then steadied. He looked back toward the river, still churning white in the moonlight. There was no sign of Wei on the bank. The current had carried Kai miles in the chaos of his escape.

*He'll come after me,* Kai said.

*Yes. He knows the secret of your root now. He cannot allow you to live, because if you live, his father—your father—will learn that he was the one who threw you into the well. And when the clan learns you possess the Void Root, they will have no choice but to destroy you and everyone who ever helped you. They would burn this entire region to the ground to ensure the secret dies.*

*Then I need to get stronger.*

*You need to get smarter, boy. Strength without wisdom is just a longer fall. Wei came at you with everything he had, and you barely survived. You are not ready for a true confrontation with your clan. Not yet.*

Kai clenched his fists. The stolen power surged at the motion, responding to his will more readily than before. He could feel it, just beneath his skin, a sun waiting to be unleashed. But the Void Sovereign was right. He'd felt how easily Wei had nearly killed him. If not for the river, if not for the dark, if not for sheer luck—he would be dead.

*Where do I go?* he asked.

The Void Sovereign was silent for a long moment. In the distance, thunder rumbled over the mountain peaks. The storm Wei had summoned was dissipating, bleeding into the natural weather of the night sky. Rain began to fall, soft at first, then harder, washing the mud and blood from Kai's skin.

*There is a village to the east,* the Void Sovereign said eventually. *A small place called Greenstone Ford, on the border between the Luo Valley and the Limestone Wastes. It is far enough from your clan's influence that no one will recognize your name or your face. And there is a man there—a merchant named Shen Pu. He owes a debt to one of my old disciples. He will shelter you for a time.*

*And after?*

*After, we find you a proper cultivation technique. The scraps I've been feeding you from the well's memory are not enough. You need a foundation technique worthy of the Void Root—something that can bind the Solar Root's power to your own, make it truly yours. I know of only one such manual, and it is locked away in the Sunken Library of Feng. It is a dangerous journey, even for a cultivator several realms above you.*

Kai looked at his hands. The golden light danced across his palms, eager to obey him now. It felt powerful. It felt like everything he'd ever wanted. But beneath it, his own Qi still swirled, pale and hungry, waiting to devour all of it if he lost control.

*Then I'll get stronger on the road,* he said. *And when I reach this Sunken Library, I'll be ready.*

*A bold claim. You barely survived a third-stage Qi Condensation cultivator. The library is guarded by creatures that would tear a Foundation Establishment master to shreds.*

*Then I learn quickly.* Kai started walking east, following the curve of the river. The rain plastered his hair to his skull, ran in rivulets down his torn robes. He could feel Wei's presence somewhere behind him, a distant golden warmth on the edge of his senses, growing fainter with every step.

But it was still there. And it was getting stronger.

*He's not giving up,* Kai said.

*No. He is not. And he will not stop. He will gather allies, resources, anything he can use against you. Your brother is not a fool—he simply underestimated you. That mistake will not happen again.*

Kai's jaw tightened. The words stung, because they were true. Wei had been caught off guard, stunned by the revelation of the Void Root. But now he knew. And Kai had seen that cold calculation in his brother's eyes, the shifting from fear to strategy. Wei was already planning his next move.

*Then I'll prepare for him,* Kai said. *I'll get to this village, find this merchant, and I'll grow. By the time Wei finds me again, he won't recognize what I've become.*

The Void Sovereign chuckled, a dry, rasping sound. *You are learning, boy. That is the difference between a survivor and a corpse. The survivor plans for the next attack while the corpse is still bleeding from the last one.*

Kai walked through the rain, following the river east. Behind him, the mountain rose black against the storm-wracked sky, and somewhere on its slopes, his brother was gathering power, planning his vengeance. Ahead, only darkness and uncertainty waited.

But for the first time in his life, Kai Lin wasn't afraid of the dark.

He was becoming something that the dark would learn to fear.

The rain continued to fall, and Kai's footsteps squelched in the mud, marking a path that led away from everything he'd ever known. He didn't look back. He didn't need to.

The past was already dead.

The voice in his head was silent, and Kai walked alone under the weeping sky, a rootless boy carrying a stolen sun in his chest and a hunger that would not be denied.

He was twelve miles from Greenstone Ford when he smelled the blood.

The path curved through a grove of weeping willows, and the scent hit him like a physical wall—copper and rot and something else, something acrid and burning. He slowed, every instinct screaming at him to turn aside. But the rain was beginning to slacken, and the scent was coming from directly ahead.

*Ahead?* the Void Sovereign asked. He'd been silent for hours, conserving his strength. Now his voice sharpened with alarm. *Ambush.*

Kai dropped into a crouch, scanning the treeline. The grove was too quiet. No birdsong, no insects, nothing but the steady drip of rain from the leaves. He reached out with his Qi senses, probing the area around him. The golden light in his dantian pulsed, lending him a faint awareness he hadn't had before.

Two bodies. Ahead, about thirty feet. One of them was still breathing.

He crept forward, staying low, moving from shadow to shadow. The trees opened into a small clearing, and the scene that greeted
